Clean and elegant form

As Jan Vahalík, my approach to design is deeply influenced by the elegance and refinement of modern Art Deco, a style that seamlessly merges the grandeur of the past with contemporary innovation. I am particularly drawn to how modern buildings, such as Rose Hill and 45 Broad Street, as well as Norman Foster's design for the JP Morgan headquarters, reinterpret Art Deco principles for today’s architectural landscape.

In my designs, I strive to capture the essence of Art Deco by incorporating its signature elements—geometric patterns, luxurious materials, and a sense of opulence—while adapting these features to suit the needs of modern living. Rather than simply replicating the past, I focus on reimagining these classic elements in a way that feels fresh and relevant, using them to create spaces that are both stylish and functional.

For me, Art Deco is not just about aesthetic appeal but also about creating environments that evoke a sense of timelessness and sophistication. By blending these traditional design elements with modern materials and techniques, I aim to craft spaces that offer a unique blend of history and innovation. Whether it’s a residential project or a commercial space, my goal is to create designs that stand out for their elegance, functionality, and enduring appeal, much like the contemporary interpretations of Art Deco seen in these examples.

However, in Prague, it can be challenging to fully embrace pure Art Deco due to the existing architectural context and the city's historical fabric. Here, instead of focusing on large expanses of glass and minimalist forms, I prioritize the use of geometric lines and elegant shapes that complement the surrounding buildings. This approach allows me to incorporate the essence of Art Deco while respecting the city's unique character. I am currently working at Eva Jiřičná’s office, where I am continually learning how to refine this balance and navigate the challenges of integrating contemporary design within historic settings or overbyrocracy of Prague. While it is my dream to work abroad, particularly in London and the USA, where I can explore Art Deco in its purest form, I am confident that I will achieve this goal in the future.

A dream is just the beginning; I’m here to transform it into lasting elegance.
